Word of the Day Challenges: Atticism

Atticism – concise and elegant expression, diction, or the like

Disclaimer: Don’t own Merlin

“Why can’t these people ever just write plainly? Why does it have to be so complicated?”

Gaius smirked as he moved the bishop on the chess board. Merlin scowled and studied his pieces.

“Because the ancient writers were all prone to atticism, and nothing would dissuade them from such things. And the point is, if you wish to learn, you have to read.”

Gwaine huffed angrily, staring at the page before him. He had been reading practically non-stop for hours, and the words were beginning to blur.

“Can’t I play chess for a bit?” he asked.

Gaius shook his head. “You both have your studies to attend to, and it is Merlin who needs to get better at chess, not you.”
