Word of the Day Challenge: Novaturient

Warning: description of flogging

Novaturient – desiring or seeking powerful change in one’s life, behaviour, or situation

Disclaimer: Don’t own Dungeons and Dragons, but the characters are mine

Sharon grit her teeth as the whip slammed into her back. She had lost count of how many times it had been used against her, but she could feel rivers of blood running down her sides from her back.

Through the haze of pain, she could hear the laughter and the taunting of Lightkeep’s minions. To begin with, she had retorted; now, it was taking all of her concentration to not cry out. She wouldn’t give him the satisfaction of hearing her pain.

Thwack.

Sharon caught the sound in her throat before it had a chance to leave her lips. It was getting ever harder to stay silent, and Lightkeep could almost certainly tell. She slumped, hopeless, and resigned herself to the next thrash…

She had no sooner done so than a strange warmth began to grow within her. It seemed to come from her stomach, but really, it felt as though it originated in her very soul: a novaturient defiance that began to spread all the way to her fingertips, building within her until she could take it no longer.

She couldn’t silence her shout when that power burst forth from her. It rushed outwards with a thunderous crash, knocking all  those in the room back and loosening the ropes around her wrists so that she could slip free from them.
