While her parents were from the Golden Waters, they ran away together for a life on the sea when they were both teenagers. Theirs was a passionate romance, full of crime as they sailed the seas. Abigail was born on a ship and traveled with her parents for her entire childhood. At 16, she decided to leave them and forge her own way in the world. Leaving her parents’ – and her first – ship, Dragon’s Gale, behind, she gathered a crew from various ports around Pirate Island and got hold of her own ship, The Damned Whore, at the age of 19.
She had a good year travelling across the seas, never seeing Dragon’s Gale, until she found herself back at Pirate Island in a small harbour town. On a night out with her crew, she met Joshua, and began a fling with him. Over the next year or so, they met up every time they were both on the Island, falling into something kind of like love. Yet when Abigail was 21, her crew procured some treasure that another pirate captain, Morris, was after. Morris was furious and sought revenge on her, but was talked down from killing her by his second-in-command, Joshua. Convinced to spare her life, Morris instead insisted that Joshua use his relationship with Abigail to spy on The Damned Whore. Joshua reluctantly agreed, though he deliberately fed Morris either useless or false information.
When Abigail was 24, she discovered that she was pregnant. She was excited for the child and sent a letter to her parents to give them the news (though she had no idea if it reached them or not), and procured a child’s nightcap for the produce of pleasant dreams in the next port they stop at – the only thing she has ever bought rather than stolen.
Fearing that the child would steal Joshua’s loyalty from his ship, Captain’s Fear, Morris kidnapped Abigail and cut the child from her belly. Joshua looked after Abigail on Captain’s Fear while she recovered, but things were never really the same between them, especially when Joshua didn’t leave with Abigail when she had recovered.
After Abigail returned to The Damned Whore, there was a kind of quiet between her and Morris, and a kind of mutual respect between them (though she was still angry at what he had done, she at least understood why he had done it while mourning for her child). The crew of Captain’s Fear bore her no ill will, with the exception of the cabin boy, Zachary, who was terrified of her.
When Morris was killed by another pirate captain in a skirmish three years later (Abigail was 27), Joshua sent Zachary to tell Abigail what had happened. Abigail demanded proof and forced Zachary to take her aboard Captain’s Fear; Joshua – now Captain – reluctantly let her aboard and allowed her to take Morris’ medallion as final recompense for what Morris did to her.
Two more years passed, during which she and Joshua still occasionally met at Pirate Island to continue their ambiguous relationship. When Abigail was 29, The Damned Whore was wrecked by the dragon turtle off the coast of Chult and she washed ashore at Port Nyzanzaru.
With a desire to just get to the harbour on Pirate Island where she usually meets with Joshua, she set off in search of a way to return to the sea without having to completely start again. Unfortunately, her reputation proceeded her, and those living in Port Nyzanzaru didn’t take kindly to her. She was sent away on a trade ship to Lantan’s Rest and effectively dumped at the other end. She turned 30 on the relatively short voyage, and was dropped off in Lantan’s Rest.
