Henry knew something was wrong as soon as the door closed – or, rather, slammed. He pressed pause, the figure on the screen freezing with his arm held over his head, the tip of his sword just about to plunge into the soft spot between the dragon’s scales.

The sound of high heels clapping on the floor reached his ears from behind him. He swiveled in his seat to look over the back of the sofa as his mum poured herself a glass of wine and put the bottle back on the rack.

“How did he take it?” he asked tentatively.

Emma started, looking over at him with wide eyes.

“What are you still doing up?”

“Had a dragon to kill,” Henry answered simply, gesturing to the TV screen with the controller. “How did he take it?”

“Not well.” Emma sighed, plopping down into the seat next to him and wincing as she watched her glass carefully, liquid inside getting dangerously close to slopping over the side. She waited until it had calmed down before she took a sip.

Henry watched his mother, then looked down at the controller in his hands. He deliberated for a moment, before offering the controller to Emma.

“Wanna kill a dragon?”

Emma looked down at the proffered device, before a wide beam broke out on her face.

“Thanks, kid,” she grinned, taking the controller and hitting ‘play’.

As the battle music started up again, with the choir cantillating in the background, Henry wondered if he would ever be as good at video games to kill a boss-level dragon one-handed while drinking a glass of wine.
